Shattered Sword - Swordtember 2022

This is one of the highlights from my Swordtember 2022 challenge hosted by Tim Kaminski. Each day, I worked to create a sculpted and textured sword inspired by a single word prompt. This prompt was "shattered", and my inspiration was the Japanese art of kintsugi (gluing together broken ceramics and filling the seams with gold) along with the imperial treasure of the kusanagi-no-tsurugi sword.

Sword modeled in Maya and textured in Substance Painter. Lit/rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 4.

reference images including japanese/dutch delftware, kintsugi, painted gold leaf, and a replica of the sword I was aiming to reproduce
